Born and raised twelve miles west of New York City in Newark, New Jersey, Daryl graduated from the nation's first high school of fine and performing art, known as Arts High. He earned a Master of Fine Arts (terminal) degree in Advertising Design from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communication Design from Pratt Institute. In 2003 he was nominated and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), London, England, and is the former Founding Dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Stanislaus and Chair of the Art and Design program at Montclair State University respectively. He began working professionally as a children's book illustrator before moving into a broad range of professional practice positions encompassing Creative Direction in Advertising and Senior Art Direction and Design in Corporate and Graphic Design environments.
Appointed Dean of the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University in March 2013, Daryl served the University in that capacity until June 2020. He was an Invited Foreign Expert in 2007, consulting on the branding and promotion of the Shanghai 2010 Expo "Better City Better Life" campaign by the Chinese government's Arts and Cultural Ministry. Lecturing internationally in Asia, Europe, and Mexico — Daryl continues to be an invited visiting Scholar in Asia and Europe and currently is a full Professor teaching across design disciplines in the visual arts program at William Paterson University.
Daryl remains active in professional practice as the founder of the Center for Design Education and Research LLC (CDER) — a research-based non-profit organization focused on advancing the visual arts and Design across disciplines and its relevance to a sustainable and global society.
