Mary J. Andrade

Mary J. Andrade has been researching the tradition of Day of the Dead in Mexico for twenty three years. This project that she started in 1987 in Janitzio, Michoacan, has taken her to different states of Mexico to gather information and to photograph a tradition that originated during the pre-Hispanic era. In 2003, Day of the Dead in Mexico was declared as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of of Humanity,” by UNESCO.

These books cover for the first time, the four areas where the P’urhepecha people live in the State of Michoacan. Mary J. Andrade interviewed historians, anthropologists and experts on how Day of the Dead is celebrated in their communities.

Mrs. Andrade has presented over 155 photographic exhibits on Day of the Dead in the United States, Ecuador, Spain, France, Mexico, Egypt and Chile and has published seven other books on the subject. She has been the recipient of many international awards, such as the OHTLI, two Silver Quills and one Silver Lens presented by former presidents of Mexico, Vicente Fox and Ernesto Zedillo.

Her books on Day of the Dead in Michoacan, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Mixquic, Morelos, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Yucatan have also received the “Latino Literary Hall of Fame” award under different categories.

Mary J. Andrade ha dedicado más de 20 años a investigar la tradición del Día de los Muertos en México. Este proyecto que comenzó en 1987 en Janitzio, Michoacán, la ha llevado a diferentes estados de la República Mexicana para obtener información y fotografiar esta tradición que se originó durante la época prehispánica. En el año 2003, Día de los Muertos en México fue declarada “Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Intangible de la Humanidad”, por la UNESCO.

Mary J. Andrade ha entrevistado historiadores, antropólogos y cronistas en cómo se celebra la tradición en sus respectivas comunidades. Ha presentado más de 160 exposiciones fotográficas sobre el Día de los Muertos en los Estados Unidos, Ecuador, España, Francia, México Egipto y Chile y ha publicado siete libros sobre el tema. Ella ha recibido varios reconocimientos internacionales, como el OHTLI, presentado por la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores de México; dos Plumas de Plata y una Lente de Plata que fueron presentados por los entonces presidentes de México, Vicente Fox y Ernesto Zedillo.

Los cinco libros de la serie “A Través de los Ojos del Alma, Día de los Muertos en México” que cubren los estados de Michoacán, Oaxaca, Morelos, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala y Yucatan, así como la Ciudad de México y Mixquic, han recibido varios reconocimientos del “Salón de la Fama de la Literatura Latina”.

Mary J. Andrade vive en San José, California y es editora de viajes del semanario bilingüe “La Oferta”, fundado en 1978 con su esposo Franklin G. Andrade, tienen dos hijas: Verónica y Tatiana y un nieto, Alejandro Gabriel Murguía.
