I am an erstwhile New Yorker and present-day Philly booster, living and working at Haverford College, where I am Professor of English. Woody Guthrie: An Intimate Life is my first book for a wider-than-scholarly audience, but it reflects longtime interests in popular music, the history of sexuality, and left politics. My other book is Troubling Minds: The Cultural Politics of Genius in the U.S. 1840-1890 (Minnesota, 2006). I've also written for a range of publications, both academic and wider audience, including Al Jazeera, Public Books, Social Text, and many others.
