I am professor of history at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and I previously taught at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. I teach classes in African-American history, the American South, history and popular culture, United States history, and a few other topics.
I've published two books, The Saint Louis African American Community and the Exodusters (The University of Missouri Press) and Southern History on Screen: Race and Rights, 1976-2016 (The University Press of Kentucky), and numerous articles.
Originally from Parsons, Kansas, I attended Baker University (BA in history), the University of Alabama (MA in American Studies), and Saint Louis University (PhD in American Studies). My wife and I are proud residents of the city of St. Louis, and I spend my free time reading, playing golf, trying out new restaurants, traveling, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
