Jonathan Holt Shannon

Jonathan H. Shannon is Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He specializes in the ethnographic and theoretical study of the musical cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean, as well as the anthropological study of food. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters on music in Syrian and Morocco, and recently published book on the Andalusian musical cultures of Syria, Morocco, and Spain (Performing al-Andalus, 2015). He is currently writing a scholarly work on Mediterranean cultures and another work of fiction on the Syrian rebellion.

He currently lives in New York City, where when he is not teaching and writing he plays the saxophone and the oud, rides his various bicycles, and entertains his son, Nathaniel.
