Inez Hollander Lake (1965-), Ph.D., was born and raised in the Netherlands but since she considered Holland flat, wet and crowded, she immigrated to the United States in 1994. She may have left her soul in The Netherlands, but her heart belongs to the US. Being bicultural is a benefit, not a handicap.
Hollander's books include a biography, The Road from Pompey's Head: The Life and Work of Hamilton Basso (Louisiana State University Press, 1994), a memoir, Ontwaken uit de Amerikaanse droom (Amsterdam: Archipel/AP, 2004) and another memoir, Silenced Voices (Ohio University Press, 2008), which also came out with Amsterdam publisher Atlas, under the title Verstilde stemmen en verzwegen levens. Her upcoming book with Atlas will deal with California and she is also writing a textbook (Dutch for Reading Knowledge) which will come out with John Benjamins. Her screenplay The Other Anne Frank, dealing with turbulent events during WWII in Indonesia, is for sale.
Since 2004 Hollander has been teaching in the Dutch Studies program at UC Berkeley. Besides being an academic and an author, she is a translator; she has also been the Dutch Content author for Rosetta Stone and she recently worked with Microsoft on a localization project involving the KIN.
Hollander does lectures on her recent book, Silenced Voices, and will do book groups, upon invitation. She loves meeting her readers during these events. A book is not complete, in her view, until it reaches the hands, eyes and mind of the reader.
Inez lives in the Bay Area with her husband and two children and her website can be found under www.inezhollander.info.
