E stato un primo approccio col nostro dialetto per segnalarne la matrice romanza e comunq…ue classica e al tempo stesso uno studio condotto fuori dagli schemi usuali per conoscere i nessi grammaticali e sintattici che lo legano al passato. In questo contesto c'è stata anche una scorribanda nella storia attraverso i toponimi che riguardano il Bellum siculum e il territorio reggino vero e proprio. Noi stessi siamo rimasti scossi dai risultati e dalle novità che emergevano; l'opinione pubblica nella sua generalità li ha accolti col massimo interesse, pur restando come in sospeso in attesa di ulteriori prove. Non abbiamo voluto deludere i nostri amici. La continuazione della ricerca è proseguita attraverso una nuova angolatura, quella dei cognomi, nella precedente pubblicazione sfiorati solo superficialmente. Si è avuta ancora una piena sintonia con quanto era venuto alla luce. Non solo. Raccogliendo in un corpo unico tutto quanto riguarda le regole della fonetica e della morfologia che hanno contrassegnato i passaggi dalle lingue classiche a quelle romanze, compreso il nostro dialetto, anche se a livello elementare, abbiamo, voluto fornire anche uno strumento indispensabile per far capire meglio il nostro metodo. Ovviamente si tratta di regole, che si sappia, non previste dai nostri glottologi e che sono specialmente legate alla lettura dei toponimi e dei cognomi. Con questo approfondimento e l'apporto di nuovi elementi il quadro si è sempre più focalizzato. Poche le rettifiche e queste per lo più a favore della tesi della latinità sostanziale del nostro linguaggio e della nostra cultura. Il presente lavoro analizza in modo particolare tutti i cognomi tipici del Reggino per allargarsi a tutti quelli di varia estrazione che successivamente sono subentrati nell'agenda telefonica. E poiché la maggior parte di questi cognomi sono rappresentati da etnici è stato necessario anche illustrare i toponimi che vi sono correlati. E stato un impegno colossale, per non dire enciclopedico, che ha preso in esame tutta la provincia, da Stilo a Laureana, fatto non solo a tavolino ma molto spesso sui posti stessi a controllare di persona, interrogando gl'interessati per avere riferimenti e consultando tutti gli scritti locali in materia.» (Dalla Prefazione).
