Wolfgang Messner is a Clinical Professor in the Sonoco International Business Department at the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, where his work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data analytics, and international business. His career spans more than three decades across industry, consulting, entrepreneurship, and academia, giving him a rare perspective on how advanced technologies move from mathematical abstraction to organizational reality.
Messner began his professional life in technology-intensive roles within financial services at Deutsche Bank in Europe and India. There, he worked on core banking architectures, large-scale systems integration, and some of the early offshoring models that reshaped global IT delivery. He subsequently moved into strategy and digital transformation consulting, holding senior roles at The Information Management Group (IMG), BMW Group’s Softlab/Cirquent, and Capgemini. He advised global organizations on information systems, analytics, customer relationship management, and cross-border service delivery—often operating at the boundary between business strategy and complex IS/IT architectures. Messner’s academic work is influenced by his consulting background. His most recent research focuses on how artificial intelligence and advanced analytics can be used responsibly and effectively in international organizational contexts. He has made significant contributions to explainable AI (XAI), deep learning, and LLM-based analysis, particularly in applications that require interpretability, contextual sensitivity, and managerial judgment. His work treats AI not as a decision-maker with agency, but as a measurement instrument and strategic tool whose value is shaped by assumptions, data quality, and governance.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Kassel, an MBA from the University of Wales, and a BSc/MSc degree in Computing Science after studies at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His academic training included early work in neural networks, data visualization, and customer analytics—areas that continue to shape his AI-centered scholarship today.
At the Darla Moore School of Business, Messner teaches courses on AI for business, data analytics, strategy consulting, and international management. He works closely with industry partners on applied AI and IS/IT strategy projects, helping organizations translate technical capabilities into robust decision processes and sustainable competitive advantage. His teaching and consulting emphasize the managerial levers surrounding AI—problem formulation, model evaluation, organizational integration, and risk management—rather than technology in isolation.
Messner’s research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals across international business, marketing, and information systems, including Journal of World Business, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of International Marketing, World Development, and Applied Soft Computing. Prior to In Business With AI, he was the author of five books and co-editor of three handbooks published by Palgrave Macmillan and Springer. Beyond academia, he contributes to public debates on AI and society, with his commentary appearing in outlets such as The Conversation and major international news media. His work reflects a central theme of this book: artificial intelligence is most powerful when treated as a normal, strategically governed technology, one that amplifies human judgment rather than replaces it.
