Michael Chanan

Michael Chanan is a scholar, documentary filmmaker, and Emeritus Professor of Film & Video, University of Roehampton. After documentaries on music for BBC2 and a spell teaching in a film school, I made several films for Channel 4 on Latin America and Cuba, before returning to academia. My films over the last twenty-five years or so have either been academically funded or zero-budgeted, ranging across both historical and contemporary subjects. My writing includes studies of early film, cinema in Cuba and Latin America, the social history of music, the history of recording, the politics of documentary, the political economy of cultural production, and most recently, 'Dementia on Screen: Global Perspectives' (2026).
