This is the second most written of child homicide in 20th century America. Only the killing of Charles Lindbergh Jr. received more notoriety than the death of Annie Lemberger.

And yet I never heard of it until I was 35 years old and all the people involved were dead. Annie's mom, Magdalena, my grandmother, kept hundreds of articles from dozens of sources from 1911 to 1950 to document the mystery. Many believed her husband, Martin was guilty of the crime. Others were certain that an intruder had kidnapped and killed 7 year old Annie.

This was the Jon Benet Ramsey mystery of its time. Was it an intruder or was it domestic violence?
