I have been writing most of my life. In high school, it was demanding English teachers and a journalism teacher who taught us rock-solid fundamentals of newspaper writing. In college, it was more writing, including an internship at the biggest weekly newspaper in the state and semesters at the University of Texas student newspaper, the Daily Texan. It was mainly sports back then, because sports was familiar. A handful of years as a newspaper copy editor turned me into a real writer, and my final 15 years in journalism led to my best work, as well as four books on baseball. My latest is about my great-grandfather, a story that inspired me for years and I finally got around to writing in the last four years.
