"Guy's books and articles are really life-skills materials using curling as his primary metaphor."
- George Karrys, CEO of The Curling News and Olympic Silver medalist.
Yes, bestselling, award winning curling writer/reporter but much more than that (Amazon wants shameless plugs). With heroes like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Bono, Gordie Howe and Sandra Schmirler (greatest female curler of all-time) I'd like to think I am a bit of a renaissance man.
Sports writing is fun and has a certain amount of inspiration to it, but I also write about creativity, spirituality and discovering one's masterpiece within.
It all started in Langenburg, Saskatchewan. Born in the middle of a typical Canadian winter I was carted off to curling rinks and hockey arenas all across the prairies. It was love at first sight and I couldn't wait to don some hockey equipment and throw my first curling rock. The Zen-like sport of curling got in my blood real quick. And the violent beauty of hockey captured my imagination. Driving down those icy roads also taught me to pray at a young age (the spirituality beginnings), and those endless miles caused me to dream big dreams.
Hey, if Gordie Howe, Mr. Hockey, could follow his dream of playing in the NHL, being from the metropolis of Floral, Saskatchewan, why not me???
So I am proud to be Canada's most published curling writer of the 21st century, but this writer has so much more to write about. I have been published in 15 magazines of various genres from international curling publications, to inspiration/spirituality and human interest. I just had my 30th cover story go to print. And, in 2009 I won the 'Scotty Harper' Canadian Curling Reporters award for 'Outstanding Story of the Year" presented to me at the Brier, curling's biggest media driven event next to the Olympics. (I wish someone else could type out the shameless plugs.)
My eclectic background is an outstanding spawning ground for a writer with a researcher's heart. Besides being an ordained minister and church planter for over a quarter of a century, I have a social work background, did some truck dispatching/chaplaincy, was a communications manager for an international humanitarian organization and managed a curling club.
Recently I have been working on a project called 'The Masterpiece Within' with co-author Claudia Church from Nashville. We have spoke in a number of venues about the material in both Canada and the U.S.A in schools, colleges, churches and businesses. We are on the verge of launching this book on Amazon/Kindle. I also have another project I spent all of 2012 on, in the works about an NHL Conn Symthe/Vezina trophy winner.
My writing is extremely story driven - focusing on the mental toughness aspects of life in general, how to deal with those inner demons, how to work the process of becoming a consistent competitive performer on the ice or our vocations, and how to re-kindle passion when life throw us obstacle after obstacle...
Kinda like being four down in the 8th end without hammer of a curling game versus an Olympic champion. As long as one has a pulse, you never know what life may bring if you keep working the process to the best of your ability.
