Michael Steinberg

Michael Steinberg has a doctorate in intellectual history from the University of Rochester. He writes on how images and ideas come to seem self-evident, how such assumptions shape experience and constrain social action, and how their specific constellation in the contemporary world have led to multiple crises. He draws on both history and philosophy, in particular German idealism in its historical context, and on non-Western bodies of thought and practice such as South Indian tantra. His history of the Adirondack Mountains for young readers, Our Wilderness, was named the best individual cultural contribution to the Adirondack Park Centennial celebration. Michael and his wife, the photographer Loret Steinberg, live in Rochester, New York, under the close supervision of their two cats.

Now that he has a book on Wagner he feels compelled to point out that he is not Michael P. Steinberg, author of "The Trouble with Wagner," or Michael Steinberg, the late author of "The Symphony."
