Tim Mulherin

Tim Mulherin first visited northwest lower Michigan's Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties in 1986, and hasn't been the same since. For years he kept field notes on his outdoor adventures there, which resulted in "Sand, Stars, Wind, & Water: Field Notes from Up North." The collection of essays and stories is a tribute to the region and its people, a testimony to an enduring friendship with an outdoorsman who showed him countless Up North diversions, and an encouragement for visitors to respect this national treasure. Mulherin earned a bachelor of arts degree in English, with a concentration in nonfiction writing, from Indiana University Indianapolis. He went on to obtain a master of arts degree in journalism from IU Indianapolis and a master of science in management degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. He also taught for a decade in IU Indy's Department of English. In 2021, he retired from his role as chief executive officer of Irvington Community School, Inc., a K-12 public charter school system on the east side of Indianapolis. Mulherin and his wife have owned a cottage in the village of Cedar, Michigan, for the past 15 years. His latest book, "This Magnetic North: Candid Conversations on a Changing Northern Michigan," explores the impact of the pandemic, climate change, and tourism on the region. He is currently writing a book on wildlife in Michigan and Indiana. And, he is working on his first novel.
