Ken Blackshaw

Kenneth Turner Blackshaw - Author, Naturalist, Ornithologist

Ken Started bird watching on Nantucket Island with mentor, Maria Mitchell Association Ornithologist Edith F. Andrews, back in the early 1950s. Since then, he has traveled the world over, courtesy of the U.S. Air Force and IBM, seeing birds, studying their behavior and authoring and editing many books about birds. He is nationally recognized for his birding skills.

In 1976 he co-authored, with Sheldon Severinghaus, A New Guide to the Birds of Taiwan, providing and English and Chinese Language introduction to bird life on that island.

He was one of the editors on three volumes of A Birder's Guide to Georgia, published in the 80s and early 90s.

Birding Nantucket with Edith Andrews is in its Seventh Printing. This is a popular guide used by professionals and amateurs alike that documents the birds that occur and have occurred on Nantucket.

Bike Birding Nantucket is another book available for people who enjoy cycling and birding.

A Year of Birding Nantucket, Volumes One through Six, published from 2005 to 2013, are compilations of over 200 species accounts compiled from Mr. Blackshaw's weekly column for the Nantucket Independent newspaper.

Mr. Blackshaw has been co-compiler of the Nantucket Christmas Bird Count with Edith Andrews and Edie Ray for many years. The Nantucket CBC attracts birders from all over the region to document the bird life on a specific day in a specific area at the end or beginning of each year.

Mr. Blackshaw has lead winter bird walks on Nantucket for more than a decade. He has also been a bird walk leader for the Maria Mitchell Association during the fall and spring seasons for more than 10 years.
