Robert D. Sutherland

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Robert D. Sutherland did his undergraduate work at Wichita State University in Kansas, received his Ph.D. in English at the University of Iowa in 1964, and, for thirty years, taught courses in Linguistics, History of the English Lanuage, Semantics, Old English, and Creative Writing (both poetry and prose fiction) at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. In 1977, he and James R. Scrimgeour founded Pikestaff Publications, a not-for-profit literary press that publishes books of poetry and prose fiction. In 2009 he began an interactive blog for writers and readers of mysteries. He and his wife Marilyn have two grown sons and four grandchildren, have traveled widely, and work to promote peace, social justice, and preservation of the natural environment. His publications include a scholarly book, Language and Lewis Carroll; a novel, Sticklewort and Feverfew, written to be enjoyed by children, adolescents, and adults (containing 74 of his pencil illustrations), which received the 1981 Friends of American Writers Juvenile Book Merit Award for author/illustrator; a second novel, The Farringford Cadenza (a suspenseful, humorous mystery); short fiction, poems, and essays on literature, education, and publishing (a number of which are available on his personal website). His other interests include classical music, the nature of metaphor, reading, travel, film noir, and the comparative study of mythologies.
