Raymond C. Murray was born in Fitchburg, Mass. He received his bachelor's degree in Geology from Tufts University and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. Following research at Shell Development Company in Houston and the
Hague he taught at The University of New Mexico, Rutgers University and served as Vice President at The University of Montana.
While at Rutgers he was introduced to Forensic Geology by an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He was also introduced to Richard Saferstein, then chief chemist of the New Jersey State Police and the author of the leading book on Criminalistics. From this came a new geologic career.
With Rutgers colleague and distinguished Soil Scientist John Tedrow he wrote the first book on Forensic Geology in 1975. This was followed by other books and papers on the subject and many lectures to Law Enforcment and University organizations around the world.
He lives in Missoula, MT with his wife Maureen J. Fleming and spends his time writing, talking, hunting, fishing and traveling.
