Thomas B. Newman

Dr. Tom Newman is Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Much of his research career has focused on identifying and avoiding unnecessary or harmful medical care.

Tom has a major role in UCSF's Training in Clinical Research (TICR) Program. He is an author of two textbooks used in that program: Designing Clinical Research (4th ed, 5th edition in preparation), and (with Dr. Kohn) Evidence-Based Diagnosis (2nd edition published 2020). He has received numerous local and national awards for teaching, research and mentoring.

A passionate advocate for sustainability and nuclear disarmament, he is donating 100% of his royalties from sales of Evidence-Based Diagnosis to Physicians for Social Responsibility.
