Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In January 1943, and as World War II entered its second year it was evident that U.S. tanks were outgunned, under-armoured, and underpowered. In short, they weren't cutting the mustard, but there was no time for a long development project. At Fort Knox, Kentucky, the newly-formed 781st Tank Battalion was detailed to run an around-the-clock marathon comparison test on forty Sherman tanks to find the best available configuration and fastest solution. When the results of the "Million Dollar Tank Test" were collected, what resulted was the Sherman "Easy Eight," an easier to manufacture tank that was also such an effective fighting vehicle that it would serve for another thirty years. The 781st Tank Battalion shipped out to Europe, where, equipped with the "Easy Eight," it thwarted Hitler's last major offensive in the West Operation Nordwind and swept southern Germany as the tip of the U.S. Seventh Army's sword. AUTHOR: John T. Mitzel lives with his wife, Kim, on a farm in southern New Hampshire with a lot of olive drab items. He is currently restoring a 1944 Ford Jeep because as he puts it, "I couldn't afford a halftrack, or a tank, or a destroyer, or a P-40!" ILLUSTRATIONS: 98 b/w photographs Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. 135p. Black and white photo of the author on the inside of the rear wrapper. Stiff white wrappers printed in black on the front and rear panels and with a black and white photo of John Horne Burns on the front panel. Just touches of wear to extremities, spine sunned, wrappers ever so lightly soiled, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. "John Horne Bjurns (1916-1953) was the most exciting American novelists to debut after the Second World War. His first novel, THE GALLERY, was acclaimed by many to be the best book about the war. His following novels, LUCIFER WITH A BOOK and A CRY OF CHILDREN, were savagely and unfairly attacked by critics. Burns left the UO.S. to live in Italy where he died at age 36, his reputation virtually obliterated and his talent largely forgotten. Yet his novels remain to this dayi dazzling works of technique and imagination. This biography is the first work to appear in the 21 years since his death; it examines the life and writing. John Mitzel (1948-2013) was a Boston writer, publisher, bookseller (Glad Day Books and Calamus Books), and gay community and cultural activist. He wrote short stories which appeared in several magazines and was at one time on the staff of Boston's gay male quarterly FAG RAG. He published MYRA & GORE (1974), SPORTS AND THE MACHO MAILE (1976) and THE BOSTON SEX SCANDAL (1980) among other titles.
