When I was in high school, I realized that the key to learning was good teaching and enough of the right practice. With this insight, I was able to get top S.A.T. scores and a full scholarship to M.I.T., where I was an A-student. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in Nuclear Fusion at 24. Later, when I was teaching at UC Berkeley, I started coaching my students to learn by practicing to mastery.

Now, you might think everyone already knows that practice makes perfect and does enough to excel. But it turns out that many students don’t, sometimes worrying that they lack the talent, concentration or interest to get A’s. In 2019 we surveyed faculty and tutors in the Student Success departments at 30 colleges and universities in the U.S. An overwhelming 205 out of 219 said fewer than one in ten of their students know that active practice is the most efficient way to learn.

Having now helped over one million teens and young adults learn challenging subjects by practicing to mastery, one lesson after the other, I remain passionate about coaching everyone to become a Power Learner.
