Hidetoshi Nishimori (1954-) was born in Kochi, Japan, and grew up there until he moved to Tokyo where he was educated at the University of Tokyo. After receiving the title of Doctor of Science from the University of Tokyo, he went to the United States for a postdoctoral research at Carnegie-Mellon University and Rutgers University. He then went back to Japan as a research associate at the Department of Physics, Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he is now a professor. He won the IBM Science Prize from IBM Japan in 1990 and the Nishina Memorial Prize from the Nishina Memorial Foundation in 2006, both for his work on spin glasses. His current interests include statistitical physics of disordered systems, quantum annealing, and the foundation of statistical mechanics.
