John D. Stempel is Senior Professor of International relations at the University of Kentucky's Patterson School of Diplomacy. He came to UK in 1988 after a 23-year career in the US Foreign Service, where he served in Africa, Iran, and India. He did his undergraduate work at Princeton,followed by a two-year stint as a destroyer officer in the US Navy training the South Vietnamese Navy. His Middle East Service in Iran provided much of the material for his 1979book, Inside the Iranian Revolution, republished in 2009 with added chapters updating the book. in 2008, he authored a critique of US Foreign Policy, Common Sense and Foreign Policy. Married to the former Susan Hodgetts of Lexington,KY., three daughters, four grandchildren--Noah,Olivia, Seth, and Elodie.
