Joan grew up in Sydney and attended the Rathbone Academy of Dramatic Art, Sydney and Trinity College London. She has taught speech and drama. In her early career she acted and worked in theatre, radio, TV and film. Looking after a homeless cat inspired her to write her first children’s book, ‘Cat’s Don’t Bark’. This first book led to her writing many other books and picture books for primary school children, and to becoming a travelling ambassador for children’s literacy. In later years Joan has continued to act in local productions on the Central Coast of NSW and to write one act plays for adults and children. Now that her husband’s health has improved she is eager to write more books to delight the imaginations of children. She credits her own vivid imagination to growing up with an astigmatic eye condition.
