I'm a lawyer, a former public defender, and I've been reading mystery novels since I was a kid. Detectives have always fascinated me and I discovered Sherlock Holmes as a pre-teen and wound up reading every story and novel Conan Doyle wrote about Holmes. Shortly after law school I began writing stories, eventually sold several to Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, then tried novels, and sold four murder mysteries to Doubleday. For a while I switched to screenplays and sold a few low-budget scripts (and learned quite a lot about screenwriting and Hollywood in general), but recently decided to try more mystery novels.
