Rachel Fixsen was born in Bath, UK, in 1965. After studying art and ceramics, she travelled in South America, North Africa and Europe before changing her mind and studying languages at London University. Six months in communist East Germany convinced her to become a journalist, and she worked for Reuters in Frankfurt and New York, later writing on finance for The Observer, The Independent and other publications. She trained as a school teacher in her forties and taught German and French in and around Bath. She now works as a financial journalist, ceramic artist and fiction writer, and has won a Commonwealth Broadcasting Association prize for the short story Dancing with the Magician. Several of her stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4. She has two children and lives in Bath.
