Udo Machat

Udo Machat designs, photographs and writes books about the game of golf.

Born and raised in Vienna, he came to North America in 1957. His education began in his native Austria, with High School and Art College in Toronto, then some additional concept and design courses at Art Center in Pasadena.

Machat became a sought-after independent designer/writer, solving problems for advertising agencies in Southern California. On one of those assignments at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells, he was introduced to Ely Callaway who had just bought a small golf club manufacturing company.

A relationship of fifteen years ensued, and only ended when Mr. Callaway passed away a few years ago. During that time Machat produced most of the printed materials, print ads, and some tv concepts for the billion dollar corporation called Callaway Golf.

More importantly though, the allure of golf had infected his mind, and he started designing and publishing books on the subject of golf.

Among the books published by Machat are:

Tom Fazio’s Golf,

The Golf Courses of the Monterey Peninsula,

The Vintage Club,

Poppy Hills Golf Course,

The Golf Ball Book, and now

Golf Courses of the High Sierra

He lives, with his cat Hooshie, in Peoria, Arizona.
