For the past 40 years, I have been involved in various aspects of media-based education and distance education. Most recently, I served as Associate Vice President for Continuing and Distance Education at The Pennsylvania State University where I was the founding Executive Director of the World Campus, Penn State's online distance education campus. Much of my writing has been in the area of distance education and the general education curriculum.

I have served on the Boards of several major national and international organizations, including the University Continuing Education Association, the National University Teleconference Network, the International Council for Open and Distance Education, the American Distance Education Consortium and, most recently, the Sloan Consortium. I was inducted into the International Adult and Continuign Education Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2007, I received the Irving Award from the American Distance Education Consortium. In 2008, I received the Distinguished Service Award from the National University Telecommunications Network and the Most Outstanding Achievement in Online Learning by an Individual from the Sloan Consortium. In 2009, I received the Prize of Excellence for Lifetime Contributions to the Field from the International Council for Open and Distance Education and the Outreach Pioneer Award from The Pennsylvania State University. I was named a Sloan Consortium Fellow in 2010.
