Shaun O'Connell

Proof. Emeritus Shaun O’Connell was a member of the English Department at University of Massachusetts, Boston 1965-2020; he also taught regularly for Harvard Extension School (1963-2005). He taught a range of courses in American and Irish literature. His reviews appeared frequently in The Boston Globe and many other publications. He wrote and appeared in two film series on prose composition which appeared on WGBH TV. His essays on American and Irish writers have been published in many journals and magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly and The Massachusetts Review. He is the author of two books: Imagining Boston: A Literary Landscape (Beacon Press, 1990; paperback edition, 1992); and Remarkable, Unspeakable New York: A Literary Landscape (Beacon Press, 1995; paperback edition, 1997). He edited an interpretive anthology, Boston: Voices and Visions (University of Massachusetts Press, 2010). His teaching and writing focuses on the sense of place, upon writers who shaped our imaginations of significant places: particularly Boston and New England, New York City and Ireland.
