Kenneth King

Kenneth King is the author of Writing in Motion: Body—Language—Technology, and six novels: Bring on the Phantoms, Red Fog, The Secret Invention, So Much For Prosperity, The Glass Pond and The Disappearing Game.

His essays and articles have appeared widely in many literary magazines and journals including; The Paris Review, The Chicago Review, The Antioch Review, PAJ: A Journal of Performance & Art, Hotel Amerika, /nor (New Ohio Review), Art & Cinema, Topoi: An International Review of Philosophy, Semiotext(e), Film Culture, Dance Magazine, and in the anthologies Footnotes: Six Choreographers Inscribe the Page, Merce Cunningham: Dancing in Space and Time, The Young American Writers, The New American Arts, Text-Sound Texts, Further Steps: Fifteen Choreographers on Modern Dance, Further Steps 2: Fourteen Choreographers on What’s the R.A.G.E. in Modern Dance, and The New American Cinema.

King also has a history as an award-winning multimedia dance artist who has performed with his dance company throughout the US and in Europe. He has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts, and was awarded a “Bessie” New York Performance Award for Sustained Achievement in 2004, which he declined to protest the Iraq War.

He has appeared in the films of Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Gregory Markopoulos, and Michael Blackwood. His dance movie collaboration SPACE CITY with filmmakers Robyn Brentano and Andrew Horn premiered at Lincoln Center’s International Dance Film Video Festival in 1981 and can be seen on his YouTube channel Kenneth King Media that also features his dance theater solos Labyrinth with Voices and Characters in Limbo made with videographer Charles Dennis, as well as his comic movie series Happy Valley Retirement Village in which he plays seven zany characters, along with many other movies and videos.
