I learned to read in my grandmother's front porch swing before I ever went to school. We spent hours out there on hot South Carolina afternoons, waiting for the Miami Sea Breeze that came each night to cool things down. My granddaddy used to say that breeze blew in all the way from Miami, Florida, just for us, and the house faced due South just to catch it. I believed every word of it. I still do.
Not long after I learned to read, I began to write. And I wrote and wrote and wrote and....well, you get the idea. I finally published my first novel The Girl Who Ate Chickenfeet (Dial Books for Young Readers) in 1998. I've been writing and publishing ever since.
My writings include fiction and nonfiction for adults and young adults. What can I say? I love it all. I read it all. And I never get tired of reading or writing.
I taught high school, college freshmen, and adults over the years, and I've led writing workshops at the University of South Carolina and other places. And when I retired from teaching full time, I decided I wanted to learn more about publishing, so I opened my own publishing company, Southern Sass Publishing Alliances. We publish both fiction and nonfiction, and right now we're in love with anthologies. Our first anthology, His MOther!, placed as a finalist in the nonfiction category of American BookFest Best Book of 2017 contests. Our newest baby, Wild, Wonderful 'n Wacky, South Cackalacky will go on sale around May 15, 2018. We are so excited!
I'm currently finishing up two middle-grade novels and muddling around the idea of an adult novel set in 1920s.
