Byron K. Marshall

BYRON K. MARSHALL, Ph.d. is Professor Emeritus of History and East Asian Studies at University of Minnesota where he also served as Chairman of the Department of East Asian Studies. Trained at Stanford University and the Center for Japanese Studies in Japan, he has been a visiting professor at Macalester College, El Colegio de Mexico, and Meiji University in Tokyo.

His primary research interest has been the intersect between intellectual and social history in modern Japan. His Capitalism and Nationalism in Prewar Japan was translated for publication in Japan (Tokyo: Daiyamondosha, 1968)and his translation of the Autobiography of Osugi Sakae appeared in Portuguese (Sao Palo: Conrad Editora do Brasil). His work has also appeared in Tetsuo Najita, et.al., Historical Dimensions of Conflict in Japan (Princeton, 1982), Harry Wray and Hilary Conroy, eds, Japan Examined: Perspectives on Modern Japanese History (University of Hawaii Press and in various academic journals.
