Harriet Freiberger

Harriet Freiberger's articles have been published both regionally and nationally. Moving from Memphis, Tennessee to the western slope of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains in 1982 connected her with the American West in a new way.

Talking with grandchildren and great-grandchildren of pioneers who ventured westward in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Harriet gained a larger perspective of the creativity and entrepreneurship required to build and sustain a community. Then and Now: A History of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, ( co-authored with photographer Ken Proper ) was published in 2009, a decade by decade story of a small town during the American century.

Now: a second edition of Lucien Maxwell: Villain or Visionary (Eagle Press, Parker, Colorado ) includes updated information. ( See www.lucienmaxwell.com )

Though little is known of Lucien Maxwell’s personal life ( 1818-1875), the legends of his presence in northeastern New Mexico grew because of the man himself. From the man and from the legends came an American who represents unique years in American history. Maxwell's life and the two million acres he and wife, Luz, owned, encompassed the Santa Fe Trail, forming a connection not only between east and west, but also between the youth and maturity of a new nation.
