Jonathan W. Daly

Jonathan Daly (b. 1958) grew up in Indiana, traveled widely after high school, studied philosophy in French at the University of Montréal, then specialized in Russian history at Georgetown and Harvard Universities, receiving his PhD in 1992. Daly teaches Russian, European, and world history at the University of Illinois Chicago, focusing on Western Civilization’s shaping of the modern world and the unequal struggle between the Russian state and society. He has written about the late Imperial Russian and early Soviet political police, the birth of the modern world and the rise of the West, the Stalinist collectivization drive, the Russian Revolution, the Russian criminal justice system, and the life and work of historian and Sovietologist Richard Pipes. He is currently researching the Cold War.
