Paul Gamble

Paul Gamble PhD has worked with elite athletes of all ages from an array of sports during a career working in elite and professional sport that has spanned three decades and three continents. Paul's aim to bridge the worlds of academic research and applied practice was evident as he completed his PhD in 2005 alongside his day job with English Premiership rugby union side London Irish. Paul published his first textbook 'Strength and Conditioning for Team Sports' in 2009. Paul's writing has long focused on applying knowledge to develop real-world expertise. Paul's interests and areas of professional practice are many and varied and his recent books have explored themes of leadership, performance management and reflective practice. However, the area he is most passionate about is supporting young athletes to realise their potential and ensuring the health of the next generation of sport stars. Paul's most recent book 'Sports Parenting', originally released in 2022 and now updated with a revised edition hitting the shelves in January 2026, continues this evolution by bringing parents into the fold. Originally from the UK, Paul is much-travelled and following six years in New Zealand most recently relocated to Canada, where he presently resides with his wife Sian and his son Leo. Paul is also an elite track and field coach - he attended the IAAF World Championships in 2017 as a coach with the New Zealand team and continues to serve as consultant coach and mentor as well as being an accredited coach developer for Athletics Canada. Alongside the independent coaching initiative that he launched in 2019, Paul presently consults with organisations and provides continuing education to coaches and practitioners across disciplines. Paul also regularly shares content on themes relating to youth sport and talent development via the Athlete Generation substack.
