Maggie Scott

Dr Maggie Scott is Associate Dean (Academic) in the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology at the University of Salford in England, UK. Her linguistic research focuses on the Historical Lexicography of the Scots and English Languages, Onomastics, and the uses and representation of the Scots Language.

She is a former editor of Nomina, the Journal of the Society of Name Studies in Britain and Ireland (2008-2013), and worked as an Etymologist for the Oxford English Dictionary and as Editor for Scottish Language Dictionaries, notably on the second Supplement to the Scottish National Dictionary (2005) and the second edition of the Concise Scots Dictionary (Edinburgh University Press, 2017). She founded the ‘Scots Word of the Week’ column for the Herald in 2005 and was its sole author until 2008. She is a member of the Editorial Board for Scottish Language and a Committee Member for the Forum for Research on the Languages of Scotland and Ulster.
