Jay Newman

Jay Newman is the R. Gordon Gould Professor of Physics at Union College, Schenectady, New York, where he has taught for 35 years. While studying for his PhD in physics at New York University, he developed a keen interest in biophysics and did a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Biophysics Department of Johns Hopkins University. Since joining the faculty at Union College, Jay has taught and developed more than 15 different courses, led study abroad in science research in Italy, and also spent a year at Stanford University. Jay has received seven multi-year grants for both research and teaching and has published over 60 scientific papers, many co-authored with some of the 30 plus undergraduate students who have done research projects in his laboratory. He is the author of an introductory textbook, Physics of the Life Sciences, designed to teach basic Physics to undergraduate life science students. Having lived in Sicily for more than 3 years during extended periods of time spread over the past 30 years, he has recently written a memoir, Savoring Sicily, sharing many of his adventures with his wife, three children, their spouses, as well as with the many groups of Union College undergraduates, in learning to love Sicily.
