William Johnston

"Dr. J," who studied under Marvin Rosenblum at the University of Virginia, has taught mathematics for more than 30 years and is Professor of Mathematics at Butler University's Department of Mathematical Sciences. He has implemented new university courses at several institutions, including: Integration Theory, which teaches the Lebesgue integral to undergraduates; Foundations of Mathematics, which teaches how to prove mathematical theorems, much like an art course might teach how to paint; Eureka!, which describes moments of great mathematical discovery that have shaped the way we think about the world, relate to one another, and act each day; and Elementary, My Dear Watson, which showcases literature, movies, and television shows that involve inductive and deductive reasoning. He loves teaching and writing about mathematics. His career has included more than 15 years successfully assuming academic roles as department chair, associate dean, and vice president, with a mantra of using strategic planning and problem solving to make institutions stronger while improving students' and faculty colleagues' lives. His textbook on the Lebesgue integral was published by the highly acclaimed AMS/MAA Press in fall 2015, which also published in spring 2022 his newest book The Calculus of Complex Functions.
