Rob Stein is the Managing Partner of Astor and Managing Editor of ETFPort.com. He began his career as an economist at the Federal Reserve, under then Chairman Paul Volcker. During the 1980's, after Paul Volcker, Rob was employed in senior trading or portfolio management positions with major money center banks and eventually became Managing Director of Proprietary Trading at Barclay's Bank plc New York. Returning to Chicago in 1994, Mr. Stein formed Astor Financial, Inc. (AF), an investment management and introducing brokerage firm. Later, Mr. Stein formed Astor Asset Management, LLC a division of AF. Astor Asset Management is a registered investment advisor with the SEC. Astor uses a proprietary economic model to structure portfolios for clients. Astor Asset Management, LLC is owned, in part, by Sanders Morris Harris Group, Inc., (Nasdaq:SMHG) a publicly traded financial services firm. In January 2003, Stein was named by Business Week as one of the best unknown managers. In 2008 Stein formed ETFPort.com, a portal for the Exchange-Traded Fund community, and as Senior Editor/Economist, he provides his fundamental analysis on ETFs to the site's users.
Mr. Stein is the author of The Bull Inside the Bear: Finding New Investment Opportunities in Today's Fast-Changing Financial Markets (John Wiley & Sons), Inside Greenspan's Briefcase: Investment Strategies for Profiting from Key Reports & Data (McGraw Hill), and Charting a Profitable Investment Course with Active Management (Marketplace Books). He has been featured in print and broadcast media such as The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Investor's Business Daily, ABC, FOX News, Bloomberg, and CNBC. Mr. Stein is Founder and President of the Dream of Jeanne Foundation and also serves as Vice Chairman on the Board of Trustees for Glenkirk. Both organizations help the mentally challenged participate fully in all areas of community life. Mr. Stein graduated from the University of Michigan.
