Matthias Nicola
Matthias Nicola studied computer science in Germany and received his Diploma degree (M.Sc.) in 1996. Alongside his studies Matthias also supported several Hospitals in Tanzania during their introduction of computer systems to improve hospital administration. Over the years he spent 21 months in Tanzania. From 1995 to 1999 Matthias worked full-time at the Technical University of Aachen in Germany on research and industry projects related to distributed & replicated databases. In the winter of 1999 Matthias received his doctorate (Ph.D.) in computer science. Committed to work on commercial database engines, Matthias joined Informix Software in California in early 2000, focusing on data warehouse performance. In June 2002 Matthias joined the DB2 team at IBM's Silicon Valley Lab in San Jose, CA. His work at IBM quickly focused on all aspects of XML in DB2, including XQuery, SQL/XML, XML storage, indexing, application development, and performance. Since the release of DB2 9.1 and pureXML in 2006, Matthias has worked with numerous partners and customers on the design, implementation, and optimization of their XML-based applications.
