Steven R. Huff

Steven R Huff (1956-) graduated summa cum laude in German literature from Arizona State University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University, where he was a student of germanist and author Ruth Klüger. He has received numerous grants and awards including a Fulbright Research Fellowship, which facilitated advanced study at the University of Göttingen (1984-85) with Hans-Jürgen Schrader and Albrecht Schöne, a Whiting Fellowship in the Humanities, the Kleist Society's Kolloquiumsstipendium für Nachwuchswissenschaftler, and an NEH grant. Most recently he was awarded a Powers Grant which enabled him to undertake research in the Casa di Goethe archive in Rome.

In addition to the monograph, Heinrich von Kleist's Poetics of Passivity (Camden House, 2009), Huff is also co-editor with Dorothea Kaufmann of "Es ist seit Rahel uns erlaubt, Gedanken zu haben," Essays in Honor of Heidi Thomann Tewarson (Königshausen & Neumann, 2012). He has authored numerous articles and reviews on such topics as Kleist, Goethe, Hofmannsthal, Baroque drama and poetry, and the relationship between music and literature. For nearly a decade he was responsible for the "Kleist" section of the The Romantic Movement: A Selective and Critical Bibliography (Locust Hill Press).

Since 1987 Steven Huff has taught at Oberlin College, where he is a professor and former chair of the Department of German Language and Literatures. His current research interests include: Goethe in Italy, German poetry of the 20th and 21st-centuries, and several ongoing Kleist projects.
