I quit work to stay home for raising our kids, and figured I finally had the time to write a novel. While writing, I was surprised at how difficult it was to get the words down because I'd never suffered from nonfiction writer's block. It wasn't laziness, but a pervasive frustration that, while my writing was "good," the story itself wasn't working.

After finishing my novel (through sheer grit) I decided to scientifically study story structure so my next novel wouldn't be so difficult. Along this side road I was amazed at how deep and consistent was story structure, and began coaching students to help them avoid the frustration I'd felt, and also to test and perfect my algorithm.

I'm currently working on my next novel, a sequel to my first.

My first novel, A LEVER LONG ENOUGH, combines my loves of technology and derring-do with the universal longing for transcendent truth. I believe there is a rational basis for this longing. Lever is about a small military team that travels back in time to film the theft of Jesus' body from the tomb.

My next book, THE STORY TEMPLATE: CONQUER WRITER'S BLOCK USING THE UNIVERSAL STRUCTURE OF STORY I wrote simply for myself to codify what I'd come up with. I'm surprised and gratified at how many people seem to find it helpful.

As I continue to coach, edit, and help authors to self-publish, I learn more about how to make writing great and common mistakes to be avoided. I like to break down the problems -- there are specific techniques you can use to pump up your writing. Check out my series "Great Ways to Write Your Novel."
