I attended Catholic schools in Appleton, Wisconsin, from 1958-1970. After earning a B.A. in English (1973) from St. Norbert College (DePere, Wisconsin), I taught English at Xavier High School from 1974-77.
I left XHS to study educational administration, earning a Master's degree from UW-Madison in 1978. For three years I was an assistant principal at Stoughton High School (Wisconsin), leaving to become Lodi High School (Wisconsin) principal from 1985-1988.
I received a PhD from UW-Madison in 1989. Since then, I have been a professor of educational administration at Western Carolina University (WCU), retiring in 2019. In addition to preparing administrators for North Carolina schools, I taught courses in Jamaica, Colombia, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
My first book--"The Six Virtues of the Educated Person"--is a philosophy of education that emerged from all those experiences. This second book illustrates the six-virtue philosophy by sharing teachers' stories about how they improve instruction. For recent blogs related to both of my books, readers should visit sixvirtues.com and read the category on "The Nordic Secret."
