Thomas R. Melville, ordained a Catholic priest in 1957 was sent to work among the Mayan people of Guatemala. He was expelled in 1967 when his plans to join a guerrilla insurgency were revealed prematurely. In May 1968, he participated in burning draft files in Catonsville, MD to publicize U.S. backing of the Guatemalan government's terroristic counterinsurgency. He co-authored with his new wife "Whose Heaven, Whose Earth?" (1971) detailing his trek from missionary to prison. His latest book, "Through A Glass Darkly, The U.S. Holocaust in Central America" (2005), details the experiences of an Iowan priest's up close witness to counterinsurgency in Guatemala.
