Lynn Martel

Author of Expedition to the Edge: Stories of Worldwide Adventure and Tales and Trails: Adventures for Everyone in the Canadian Rockies, Lynn Martel grew up in Montreal, Quebec where she studied creative writing at Concordia University with a minor in the city's fast-paced dance club fashion scene.

After migrating to Banff in the Alberta Rockies in the early 1980s, she fell hopelessly in love with the mountain life, eventually graduating from ski bum to full-time freelancer. She writes about mountain adventure, culture, history, personalities, science and the natural environment for publications including the Rocky Mountain Outlook, Explore, Canadian Geographic, Gripped, Westworld, Highline, Kootenay Mountain Culture, Jasper Fitzhugh, Whistler Pique and the Calgary Herald, among others. She edits the Alpine Club of Canada Gazette, the club's thrice-annual newsmagazine, and has written seven of the ACC's Summit Series biographies of notable Canadian mountaineers. She also edits Golden BC's Local Townie monthly culture magazine.

When Lynn is not at her desk in the Canadian Rockies, you'll find her exploring wilderness landscapes - backcountry skiing and mountaineering up peaks and across glaciers, backpacking, scrambling and rock climbing, paddling on clear mountain rivers and lakes, hiking through wildflowers and accompanying wildlife biologists and glaciologists to their research sites, sleeping in tents and high alpine huts - all the while researching her next article.
