Sarah Danforth

Sarah Benedict Danforth was born in Portland, Oregon in 1975 and grew up in the stumptown suburbs on her grandparent's produce farm. Her interests always included gardening, food and the arts so when she came home after college, starting a small farming business was a natural choice.

"If you have a garden, you always have enough to eat," says Danforth, "but my family wasn't really that into making good food." While attending Sarah Lawrence College in New York, Sarah worked in a small neighborhood restaurant in TriBeCa. She learned from the owner/chefs how to use simple ingredients to make real soul building food.

The Art Farm began in 1997 with only a handful of clients - back when organic gardening was still "alternative". When her grandparents sold their 40 acres in 1999, Sarah started saving and honing her skills as a cook/artist. She bought her own farm in Amity, Oregon in 2005 and after spending her first year remodeling her 1916 farmhouse, re-opened the Art Farm in 2006.

Sarah is now growing speciality produce, raising free range chickens for eggs and maintaining a modest herd of nubian goats for fresh milk. Still an artist, she sells her 'farm chic' photography and supports the work of other local artists as well. When asked what she might tackle next the unstoppable Danforth says, "I'm not sure, but I just built a 'fromagerie' in my basement!"
