Author Mary Carter published her first novel, Sweet Peppers, Sour Grapes and Wild Flowers in 2003. Her book, A New Birth, was released in 2009.
In 2005, Mary began her Bloomfield Legacy Series, a chronological group of historical novels including Lest We Forget, Streets of Ferry, and her newest offering, Stairs to Yonder. These books record the joys and sorrows of the poor but proud Bloomfield family.
The series begins in the 1940s and documents the ups and downs of an African-American family as they strive to eke out a meager living from unforgiving farmland off the North Carolina coast. Set in the era of segregation, the Bloomfield's story sheds insight into our nation's painful racial history. The newest installment, Stairs to Yonder, now available in paperback and Kindle, is set in the year 1958-1959.
Timeless themes of faith, family, enduring love, and the dream of a better tomorrow emerge as the reader follows the growing family and bears witness to the younger generation's embrace of a wider world and the opportunities higher education can afford.
Mary prides herself on crafting stories that "patch together the quilt of life with extraordinary grace and delightful humor."
A retired educator who taught in northern Indiana, Mary Flowers Carter returned to North Carolina with her husband and family years ago. When she is not busy writing, she is constantly active: bowling, playing tennis, painting, and finding time to work on a number of unfinished needlework projects.
