He returned to the UK in 2016 after five years in South Africa, where he collaborated with a township filmmaker; worked at a rehab; volunteered at an academy in Cape Town helping young people from townships of the Western Cape; and was student adviser at a progressive school.
Following the Asian tsunami, in January and May 2005 he visited affected areas in Tamil Nadu, accompanied by his local friends and colleagues, providing therapeutic help to villagers and some training to volunteers.
He has two grown-up sons (whom he raised as a sole parent) and two young daughters. He has a special interest in race and diversity and is co-author of 'Racism and the limits of radical feminism', in Louis A Castenell, Jr and William F Pinar eds, Understanding Curriculum as Racial Text.
His second book, Relearning Experience: To Resolve Emotional Problems, was published 18 June 2019 (www.relearning.co.uk).
