On December 31, 2007 I walked away from primary care internal medicine and geriatrics, and from my career treating close friends and neighbors. It was a difficult decision, but I was tired. My practice of medicine had come first for over 30 years, my family second, and me third. A strong need to reconnect with loved ones and to reenergize my own body had developed. But along with this burned the desire within to impart a behind-the-scenes knowledge garnered over time by this small town doc concerning the massive problems emerging from and percolating within the American medical system--thus, the reason for The Rise and Fall of the American Medical Empire. Along the way, I came to realize that guilt was present as well; I had retired at too early an age. So, for patients across the country and friends nearby, this book is for you.
