N. Subramanian

Dr. N. Subramanian was born in Tamilnadu, India, and grew up in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. He completed his schooling in Chennai and earned his Engineering Degree from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai in 1972. Subsequently, he earned his Master's and Doctorate degrees from the Madras University(College of Engineering, Guindy) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

After working for 2 years at IIT, Madras as Post Doctoral Fellow, he was invited by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to do Post-Doctoral research and did work with Prof. J. Lindner of Technical University of Berlin from 1980-82 and with Prof. Petersen of Hochschule der Bundeswehr, Munich during 1984. He started his own company Computer Design Consultants, at Chennai in 1982.

The highlights of his professional career of almost 50 years include designing several multistory concrete buildings, steel towers, industrial buildings and space frames. Based on his research and experience, Dr Subramanian has contributed more than 310 technical papers in International/ national journals & seminars and published 25 books.

His books Principles of Space Structures (Wheeler Publishing), Design of Steel Structures (Oxford University Press) and Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures (Oxford University Press) received the ACCE(I)-Nagadi Award in the years 2000, 2011, and 2013 respectively. He was honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award of College of Engineering, Guindy -Anna University in Mar. 2015 and was elected to the Indian National Academy of Engineering in Nov. 2020.

He is Life Fellow/Member of several professional bodies, including the American Society of Civil Engineers,The American Concrete Institute, The Indian Concrete Institute and the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers [ACCE(I)]. He was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Assciation of Structural Engineers (IAStructE) in 2022. He also served as vice president of the Indian Concrete Institute and Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India). He is a recipient of several awards including the Tamilnadu Scientist award, ACCE(I) Gourav Award 2021 for Significant Contributions to Civil Engineering Profession, and the Life Time Achievement award from the Indian Concrete Institute. He is in the editorial board of the International Journal of Space Structures, and the Indian Concrete Journal and in the review committee of The American Concrete Institute, and Journal of Indian Concrete Institute.
