Steven J. Brady

I am an associate professor of History and International Affairs at The George Washington University, focusing on the history of international relations, broadly defined. Of special interest are: early American diplomacy, U.S.-German relations, paradiplomacy, and religion and foreign relations. I also write and teach in the area of military and society, with a focus on religion.

My third book, "Less than Victory: American Catholics and the Vietnam War," was published (October 2025) by Cambridge University Press, in the series Military, War, and Society in Modern American History. I am currently writing a biography of Adlai E. Stevenson II, a former governor of my native Illinois ("Adlai Stevenson: The Life and Legacy of a Liberal Icon"). My longer-term book projects look at: the history of US-Vatican relations; and the paradiplomacy of American governors.
